A rich, hearty, and comforting family-style casserole made with seasoned ground beef,
tender potatoes, and creamy cheese. Perfect for weeknight dinners, potlucks, or meal prep.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 4–5 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • Optional: chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the beef mixture:
    Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onion and cook until soft.
    Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds. Add ground beef, season with salt, pepper, and paprika.
    Cook until browned and drain excess fat.
  3. Prepare the sauce:
    In a bowl, mix cream of mushroom soup with milk until smooth.
  4. Layer the casserole:
    • Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish.
    • Spread half of the cooked beef mixture over potatoes.
    • Pour half of the soup mixture on top.
    • Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, beef, and soup mixture.
  5. Bake:
    Cover with foil and bake for 60 minutes, or until potatoes are tender.
  6. Add cheese:
    Remove foil, sprinkle shredded cheddar evenly over the top,
    and bake uncovered for another 15–20 minutes until melted and bubbly.
  7. Rest before serving:
    Let casserole sit for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with parsley if desired.
Tips for Best Results:

  • Slice potatoes thinly and evenly for proper cooking.
  • Add dried thyme or Italian seasoning for extra flavor.
  • Substitute cream of chicken soup for a different taste.
  • Add peas or corn for extra texture and nutrition.

Storage

  • Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat at 350°F (175°C) in the oven or microwave until warmed through.
  • Freeze for up to 2 months if needed.
